West Indies players threatened to drop ODI matches against India

Hours before the first ODI match against India at Kochi, members of WI ODI team threatened to snub the match over a pay dispute. The whole incident created a mess in and around the stadium. A joint agreement was signed on last month covering the aspects of the pay and perks to the players between the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA). But Dwayne Bravo, the ODI captain, came up with claim that the players are unaware about the talks and would not accept the outcome.

The WI team also stayed away from the practice section and the press conference on Tuesday, which also triggered the suspicion of boycotting the match.

However, BCCI and Kerala Cricket Association intervened in the matter and insisted that Wednesday’s match was on.

The West Indies Cricket Board issued a statement in this regard saying that they were aware of the dispute and confirmed the possibility of a strike.

“It has also come to the WICB’s attention that the some of the players could withdraw their services for the first ODI,”

“The WICB deeply regrets this apparent eventuality, especially in light of the tedious and substantial work which went into the good faith negotiations to arrive at the new, historic (agreements). The WICB apologises to the fans, the BCCI (Indian board) and all other stakeholders should the first ODI be disrupted as a result of player action. The WICB is making every effort to ensure that it fulfils all its commitments and that cricket is played.” the statement read.
